Woodblock Prints: Parts and Process

Matt Brown, of Lyme, makes woodblock prints using the traditional Japanese hanga method, printing with brushes and a hand-held baren from multiple hand-carved wood blocks. Making use of rice paste, pigments and water, hanga was the technique used to make the ukiyo-e prints of Hokusai, Hiroshige, and others during the 19th century. It is a step-by-step, part-by-part printing process, and the exhibit is intended to be a window into the multi-layered working method Matt has evolved to develop his prints.
